Inbox (Receiving Email)

Receive, read and reply to email on your domain - right inside eSMS Mail.

eSMS Mail isn't just for sending. Turn on the dashboard inbox for a domain and mail sent to any address on it lands in the app, where you can read, reply and manage it - like a lightweight Gmail/Zoho, on your own domain.

Enable the inbox for a domain

  1. Verify the domain (Domains → add domain → add the DNS records → verified).

  2. Add an MX record pointing mail to eSMS Mail:

    TypeHostValuePriority
    MX@send.esmsafrica.io10
  3. On the domain's page, flip Dashboard inbox on.

Within ~2 minutes, mail for any address @yourdomain.com (catch-all) is delivered to your Inbox. Enabling the inbox turns off email forwarding for that domain - a domain is an inbox or a forwarder, not both.

Using the inbox

The Inbox section works like any mail client:

  • Read messages (sender HTML is rendered safely), download attachments.
  • Reply - your reply is sent from the address that received it, correctly threaded, through the same authenticated send pipeline (so it lands in inboxes).
  • Compose new messages from any verified sender address.
  • Sent folder, plus Spam and Trash; search; mark read/unread.

API

List, read and manage received mail programmatically:

# List inbox (folder = inbox | spam | trash)
curl "https://send.esmsafrica.io/v1/inbox?folder=inbox" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer esms_k_your_api_key"

# Read one message (marks it read); includes body + attachments
curl https://send.esmsafrica.io/v1/inbox/{id} \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer esms_k_your_api_key"

# Reply (sent via your domain, threaded)
curl -X POST https://send.esmsafrica.io/v1/inbox/{id}/reply \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer esms_k_your_api_key" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"text": "Thanks - got it!"}'

# Unread count (for badges)
curl https://send.esmsafrica.io/v1/inbox/unread-count \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer esms_k_your_api_key"
MethodPathNotes

Notes

  • Receiving requires the domain's MX to point to send.esmsafrica.io.
  • Large attachments are capped per message; oversized ones keep their metadata.
  • Inbound mail is scanned; you can move anything to Spam or Trash.
